Mustachioed stars of Moscow

On December 1, the 21st exhibition of small pets “Mustachioed Stars” took place at the Sokolniki Exhibition and Convention Center. It brought together those who stay a little away from large exhibitions of dogs and cats - owners of decorative rodents of all breeds and stripes.

Mustache Stars takes place twice a year, at the beginning of winter and in spring. This year, on April 21, the twentieth anniversary exhibition took place, which, according to reviews from regular visitors, became one of the largest.

And the winter exhibition was traditionally filled with the festive atmosphere of the upcoming New Year. There were also more different competitions, which gave any of the participants a chance to be a winner, no matter what animal they came with.

There was a separate competition program for decorative rats, Syrian and dwarf hamsters, guinea pigs and rabbits, gerbils, degus, mice and chinchillas.

The arrival of participants began at eight in the morning, because before the opening of the exhibition for visitors, all animals had to undergo mandatory registration and veterinary control, so there was some waiting and queues. After all, this time more than five thousand animals of all types were exhibited, and this does not count litters put up for sale without competitive evaluations.

The main competition, of course, was the selection for exterior, especially among decorative rats. Rat breeders take breeding work no less seriously than cat and dog breeders. And even though breeding work in ornamental rat breeding has been carried out not so long ago, this does not make the work less responsible.

It is worth noting that the breeding lines and breeds of rats are very diverse, but most of them are special breed lines of laboratory animals that have certain properties necessary for research work. Decorative rats are sometimes quite different from laboratory animals, not only in appearance, but also in character and health characteristics.

Only breeding animals obtained from planned matings took part in the competition for exterior appearance and for the best breeder of decorative rats. They, like purebred dogs, received their titles and rosettes. Ornamental rats, whose origins are simpler, participated in the pet class, a kind of beauty pageant, in sponsorship nominations for the best rat of its color or coat type, in a costume contest and in a variety of sporting competitions.

For example, the “rat climber” competition, in which rats climbed up a cat’s scratching post at speed, or the rat race, where the rat that ran the fastest along a long table to the call of its owner won. There are also competitions for the longest tail, the curliest fur and many others. There were some quite original ones among them - for example, a competition for rat owners, in which the owner had to identify his animal by smell among several others.

Rat agility was a separate activity - a rat's passage through an obstacle course against a time limit and a number of points. Everything was serious here, just like with dogs. Several projectiles of varying degrees of difficulty are placed on the table - pipes, barriers, labyrinths - which the animal must overcome. It is impossible to force him to overcome obstacles by force, to force him to move. You can only lure with your voice, treats or affection. In the competition, a rat and a person work in pairs, and the more trained the rat is, the more you work with it, the greater the chances of winning... The rat that has passed all the obstacles fully and spent the minimum time on the course is considered the winner.

There were also many competitions for hamsters. “Labyrinth of the Minotaur”, in which hamsters competed for speed in moving through tunnels, competitions for the heaviest and lightest hamster, “Dandelion - fat cheeks”, the winner in which was the most thrifty hamster, who hid the most food in his cheek pouches. Due to the significant difference in size, different categories were introduced for Syrian and dwarf and Djungarian hamsters.

Owners identified their hamsters by smell in the Stinky Pete competition.

Guinea pigs participated in the exhibition in the general “pet” category, for which the breed, sex and breeding origin of the animal does not matter. The evaluation criteria were the general appearance, grooming and sociability of the animal, and its state of health. The winners received memorable and edible prizes and award diplomas.

The name of the guinea pig competitions was especially amusing. "Fort Pigyard" - a quest to find a cucumber, "38 crocodiles" - a competition for the longest pig, "My Half" - a competition for twin pigs, in which the most similar animals from different litters were determined.

There was even a prize “For the will to win” for the pig that participated in the maximum number of competitions, but never won.

There was a costume contest for both the guinea pigs and the bunnies. The rabbits, in addition to the standard competitive assessment of the exterior, had competitions for the longest and shortest ears, sports competitions and audience prizes.

An exposition of exotic animals, which has been taking place as part of the exhibition since 2011, also took place on a non-competitive basis. This time, visitors were able to see meerkats, mongooses, dormouse mice and even sugar gliders, the Australian relatives of our flying squirrels.

You could also buy everything you need for your pets there, from special food and fillers to souvenirs with funny prints. Part of the proceeds from the sale went to a fund to help rodents affected by scientific experiments.

The Krysart art competition dedicated to rodents, held as part of the Mustache Stars, also attracted considerable interest. Anyone could submit their photograph, drawing or video, one way or another related to rodents, to the competition.

At the exhibition, visitors could not only admire the animals on display and cheer for them in competitions, but also get acquainted with the peculiarities of keeping each type of rodent, the pros and cons of a particular species or breed.

The organizers of the Mustache Stars exhibition are actively engaged in educational work, explaining to future and existing rodent owners how important proper care and proper handling of animals is. After all, hamsters and rats are not living toys that can be content with a three-liter jar as a home and table scraps. They have their own characters, their own habits and needs. which should be taken into account, and then the pets will delight their owners with cheerful behavior and longevity.

“The customer is at the center of your business. How to implement a customer-centric concept in your pet store"

Nick Deschamps, Germany, owner of Genic, Germany, expert in retail, marketing, business consultant for the largest European company Fressnapf, as well as other well-known global retailers.

“In the good old days,” retail, especially specialized retail, followed the path of compiling an assortment that had nothing to do with what the buyer really wanted. The retailer was a market expert and therefore his choice was based on his own sense of what was good for the customer.

But the world has changed. Trade began to depend not on what the seller wants, but on the desires of the buyer. The buyer himself has changed. New conditions should change the retailer and the logic of organizing retail and supply chains.

Nick Deschamps will tell you how to do this in his lecture. He will give practical advice and give the most successful examples implemented in retail. He will tell you how a customer-centric concept will help organize a new generation pet store, how to work with assortment and pricing, and how to communicate with the buyer. The implementation of this concept will ultimately allow you to retain your customers and attract new ones, including from non-specialized retail.
